Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ditmir Bushati calls for new attitude by European Union (EU) toward the Eastern Europe countries.
In his address during a seminar titled 'Safety and Enlargement - Foreign Policy Perspective for Eastern Europe' on Monday Bushati said that currently EU is more focused on herself that foreigners.
"The Europe nowadays is very distant from the Europe of 18 years ago when I studied in Netherlands. Then the perspectives of a united Europe seemed closer than ever and served as source of inspiration for those coming from Eastern Europe and the EU member countries citizens. This attitude changed radically during many years and now the Europe is focused on herself more than on foreigners.
In my opinion the 'open-doors' policy, which is currently implemented by NATO, would induce the Eastern Europe countries to complete internal reforms. This way of doing would also improve relations between neighboring countries. I really believe that a dynamic re-launch of the EU's enlargement policy for the Western Balkans and an objective recognition of the countries' efforts that have undergone dramatically transforming reforms, like Albania, serves in a long-term to the united Europe's interests," said Bushati.
The minister also said that a better political and security cooperation between the EU and the Western Balkans and the opening of negotiations for ready-to-go countries would be a solid proof of Europe's awareness of this need.
