Medicaments consumption in Albania seems to be increasing despite the fact country’s population is shrinking. The most recent data made public by the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) show that 3374 tons of medicaments were imported during the last 8 months of 2017 compared to 3128 tons in 2016. Likewise this figure is much higher even compared to the same period of 2015 where only 2702 tons of medicaments were imported.
The expenditures for medicaments amounted to ALL 15.9 billion during a period of time from January to August 2017, compared to ALL 13.9 billion in 2016, registering a 14% increase.
According to the pharmacists the growing trend of medicaments consumption is related to multiple reasons. Population aging, increased resistance to medication and the growing morbidity are the three main causes indicated by the pharmacists at retail stores as related to the medicaments consumption increase.
Population aging is the main factor. Increasing the number of the elderly explains the pharmacists increase the amount of drug consumption for tension, heart, Parkinson, etc. In many cases the elders suffer from more than only one chronic illness so they are the largest contingent of medicaments purchasers.
The pharmacists also claim that the number of people who are becoming resistant to medicaments is increasing. The frequent use increases body’s resistance thus leads to a major consumption of medicaments. Even uncontrolled foods or sedentary life have contributed to lowering the body's response to the viruses.
