Almost 80 percent of energy supply to the citizens comes from imports. Fierza lake level reached a critical level on Monday due to the prolonged drought. The most recent data released on Monday by Albanian Power Corporation (APC) show that the lake’s level decreased to 269 meters.
Electricity Power Distribution Operator (OSHEE) is preparing the procedures for another import of energy in August on view of the current situation. This process aims to enable the purchase of 30,000 megawatts per hour as a result of energy consumption increase due to the high temperatures.
A fund of EUR 52 Million was spent by OSHEE for the energy import during July. Meantime the new procedure is expected to cost more due to the unfavorable pricing period in the stock-market.
On the other side if the prolonged drought will last the country risks total dependence on energy imports in September. Under these conditions, the purchase of energy would exceed OSHEE's financial capabilities, demanding even the intervention of the state budget.
