Tirana mayor, Erion Veliaj explained on Friday the motives that make a subway construction currently impossible. Speaking in front of a private university’ students over Tirana’s urban planning, he said that urban transport is seen as city’s future.
“I believe that we need realistic plans, detaching ourselves from populism that promises things that cannot be done. The cost of one km metro in Europe today is between EUR 250 million, EUR 170 million is constructed by a Chinese company. This figure exceeds three times the Tirana city hall budget.
It means that we would be forced to do nothing by one km of metro during the next three years. On view of this logic I believe that we have a realistic plan, in accordance with the economic conditions, and even avantgarde compared to the past,” said Veliaj.
